Ep. 1 – Women Vocalists and Amazon Songs

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Mobilis in Mobili, a new show that wants to take you from the thermocline to the stratosphere and random points in between. It means “moving in a moving thing” or “changing in a changing medium.” I’ve moved from radio to podcasting, and this open format show will be infinitely flexible, hence the title. It comes from Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the motto of Captain Nemo’s ship the Nautilus and much like Nemo, I’d like to take you on some fantastical journeys, albeit aural rather than nautical, although sometimes it will be, perhaps, a bit of both.
My first show stems from an obsession I have with Amazons, that mythic ideal of female strength and determination. The primary inspiration comes from a quote by Fargana Qasimova, an accomplished Azerbaijanian vocalist in the mughum style. She says
“Women can sing not only with delicacy, but with the STRENGTH OF WARRIORS.”
I couldn’t agree more, so I compiled the first episode with that in mind- strong, powerful, haunting, terrific female vocalists. Enjoy.
